Global market maker Citadel Securities has established a new office in Amsterdam to serve as a European base for its equity options operations.

The company is setting up teams for trading, technology, and quantitative research at the new location.

These staff members will focus on expanding the firm’s equity options business and providing liquidity across European listed derivatives markets.

Expanding European Operations

Amsterdam has long held a reputation as a central hub for European options trading, a legacy that traces back to the founding of the European Options Exchange in the city in 1978.

The local ecosystem already includes major high-frequency trading firms and market makers, making the city a primary concentration point for financial technology and trading talent in Europe.

Citadel Securities cited this existing concentration of specialized talent and market infrastructure as a primary reason for choosing the city for its latest expansion.

The company noted that the local team will work directly on strengthening market resiliency and expanding its institutional services across the continent.

Growing Local Financial Sector

The addition of the Amsterdam office brings Citadel Securities’ total global footprint to 15 offices across North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region.

Financial institutions have increasingly expanded their presence in the Netherlands in recent years to maintain strong operational bases within the European Union.

The Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets, known locally as the AFM, oversees the conduct of financial markets in the country, where trading volumes have remained consistently high.

The arrival of another major international market maker further reinforces the city’s position as a dominant center for European capital markets and specialized financial technology roles.
