A major section of the A9 motorway will close to traffic between the Holendrecht and Badhoevedorp junctions from Friday evening, July 24, through Monday morning, July 27.
The closure affects travel heading from Amsterdam-Zuidoost toward Schiphol Airport and is necessary to support an ongoing project to widen the road.
Work begins at 8:00 PM on Friday and is scheduled to wrap up by 5:00 AM on Monday.
Detours and expected delays
Motorists traveling through the area will be diverted along the A2, the A10-Zuid, and the A4 highways.
National road agency Rijkswaterstaat expects the detours to add between ten and thirty minutes of extra travel time for most drivers.
The weekend disruption is part of a larger, long-term project aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing noise pollution around Amstelveen.
Opening the new sunken section
Once this weekend’s work finishes, drivers will begin using the northern trough of the new sunken highway section near Amstelveen.
Crews will then shift their focus to constructing the southern trough, marking the next phase of the motorway expansion.
The broader modernization of the A9 between Badhoevedorp and Holendrecht involves widening the road to four lanes in each direction and building sunken sections with green roofs to better integrate the highway into the surrounding landscape.
More closures planned ahead
People who live nearby or commute along this corridor should prepare for additional traffic measures over the coming months.
Further weekend closures and lane reductions are planned as construction progresses on the southern section of the highway project.
Travelers heading to Schiphol or commuting between the southern suburbs and Amsterdam are advised to check traffic apps before heading out during construction weekends.
