Daniel Szalai’s Novogen exhibition opens at Droog

Photographer Daniel Szalai has captured 166 Novogen White hens individually against a neutral background. These chickens, bred to produce eggs used in pharmaceutical products including vaccines, are usually valued only for their biological function. At first glance, Szalai's photographs resemble a scientific catalogue, but closer inspection reveals something different: each image is an individual portrait of a distinct creature. By temporarily removing these animals from their anonymous production system context, the artist grants each one its own presence and dignity.
