Children's reading takes centre stage as the Kinderboekenweek returns to venues across Amsterdam. The national celebration has run in the Netherlands since the 1950s and is one of the longest-standing reading promotions in Europe. Each year it is built around a theme, and schools, libraries and bookshops across the country take part. In Amsterdam the programme includes free events, with activities for babies and toddlers as well as older children, so the youngest readers get a share too. It is a good chance for families to find new authors and illustrators, and to spend unhurried time with books.
