Two separate traffic accidents near the entrance of the Zeeburgertunnel forced the closure of a major stretch of the A10 Ring North on Wednesday afternoon.

The crashes occurred on the inner loop of the highway, prompting officials to close the road between the Durgerdam exit (s115) and the tunnel entrance.

Major delays across Amsterdam-Noord

The closures led to extensive traffic backups across northern parts of the city and surrounding access roads.

Drivers taking the diversion via the Zuiderzeeweg faced delays of up to 45 minutes as traffic backed up along the local route.

Additional congestion built up quickly on the Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg (s116), where drivers experienced delays of around 20 minutes, while the remaining open stretches of the Ring North saw waiting times exceed 25 minutes.

Police investigation under way

National road authority Rijkswaterstaat advised motorists to avoid the area and follow regional detours where possible.

Emergency services responded to the scene, and police opened an investigation to determine the causes of both collisions.

Authorities kept the lane closures in place while investigators examined the site and cleared the damaged vehicles from the roadway.

Essential link for city commuters

The Zeeburgertunnel serves as a primary transit point for vehicles traveling between Amsterdam-Noord and the eastern parts of the city, including IJburg and the A1 junction.

Disruptions at this location frequently cause ripple effects throughout the city’s broader arterial road network during peak hours.
