On Tuesday 1 September, part of Palmgracht in the Jordaan became wartime Amsterdam for Hanneke en Fiet, a new Dutch film about a young Jewish girl in hiding during the Second World War.

The street was hung with flags and wartime posters for a key Liberation Day scene, with about 25 extras in 1940s clothes and hairstyles.

Director Mischa Kamp and screenwriter Tamara Bos based the film on Ran Cohen Harounoff’s book about his mother’s wartime memories.

From coffeeshops to romance

Hollywood has long leaned on the city’s coffeeshops and Red Light District, and even Ocean’s Twelve filmed a scene at coffeeshop De Dampkring.

In recent years, though, Amsterdam has mostly served as a setting for romance and nostalgia.

In The Fault in Our Stars, two American teenagers visit the Anne Frank House and dance in the bicycle tunnel under the Rijksmuseum, and their bench on Leidsegracht became a place of pilgrimage for fans.

The British film Midwinter Break sends an older couple on a nostalgic trip to the city, while in Jimpa Olivia Colman visits her father in his Amsterdam canal house.
