The Netherlands’ first and only Flow Arts School has been running at CanDance Studios on Isolatorweg in Sloterdijk-West since March.
Flow arts mixes dance, acrobatics and handling objects such as poi, hula hoops, fire staffs, buugengs and LED pixelwhips.
The school was set up by Flow Arts Netherlands, an association founded this year to help the art form grow and build a community.
Classes run every Monday evening and cost €25 each.
On Tuesday evenings, fire jams take place in the car park from 19:00 to 23:00, and hosts help first-timers.
Reporter Patricia Jacob joined an advanced poi lesson with teacher Bzarr, a co-founder of the association who has been involved in flow arts since 2002.
Keeping two swinging weights in rhythm was harder than it looked, and a fellow student told her the moves only seem simple.
Teacher Odile Vermeulen, who performs as Curious Sparkle, says dancing with an object helps people focus on the moment and reach a flow state.
An open day follows on Monday 2 November from 19:00 to 22:00, with small classes to try different objects; it is not yet decided whether entry will be free.
