Bright fireball over Amsterdam identified as falling SpaceX satellite

Skygazers across the city spotted a slow-moving streak of light, which experts say was a decommissioned Starlink satellite re-entering the atmosphere.

Residents across Amsterdam reported seeing a bright fireball moving across the night sky at around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday evening.

People in several neighborhoods, including Zuidoost, West, and the Oude Houthaven, captured footage of the glowing object as it traveled slowly overhead.

The unusual sight prompted widespread curiosity, with many locals taking to social media to share videos and wonder if they had seen a breakup of a large meteor.

Space debris burning up

Satellite experts confirmed shortly after the sightings that the object was not a natural meteorite, but rather a piece of space debris returning to Earth.

According to research staff at TU Delft, the fireball was a Starlink satellite operated by SpaceX that was re-entering the atmosphere.

The specific satellite, identified as Starlink 1541, entered the upper atmosphere above England before beginning to fragment and burn up from atmospheric friction.

Visible across the Netherlands

This process typically happens at altitudes between 50 and 90 kilometers, which makes the resulting light trail visible across very wide geographic areas.

As a result, the bright trail was seen not only from Amsterdam, but also by onlookers in Utrecht, Flevoland, and parts of Noord-Brabant.

Eyewitnesses in West noted that the fireball moved across the sky in a direction from the northwest toward the east and south before fading from view.

Routine atmospheric re-entries

Satellites in low Earth orbit naturally experience atmospheric drag over time and are intentionally de-orbited at the end of their operational lifespan.

Because they are designed to burn up almost completely upon re-entry, it is extremely rare for any debris from these events to reach the ground.

While re-entries happen regularly around the globe, seeing one directly over a densely populated city during clear evening hours remains an uncommon experience for residents.
