The garden at the Tolhuistuin in Amsterdam Noord has shut its gates because of persistent nuisance, which puts dog walks and picnics there on hold for now.
Director Anne Schaepman confirmed the closure after Het Parool reported it.
The garden was already locked in the evenings and is now closed during the day as well.
Drinking and aggression
According to Schaepman, the garden is no longer safe enough for visitors and staff.
She would not go into individual incidents, but she says groups of people who drink alcohol and behave aggressively have been causing trouble for some time.
She called the closure sad, but also said that people having to roam the city like this is a serious social problem.
No reopening date
The Tolhuistuin is a cultural centre in Shell’s former staff restaurant, with two concert halls, a restaurant and a dance school among its facilities.
The garden regularly hosts talks and performances and will remain open for events.
The centre is in talks with the district and the safety coordinator and will reopen the garden once it is safe, but Schaepman cannot yet say when.
Until then, try one of these other green spaces around the city.
