Drivers traveling around the Netherlands this summer face significant traffic delays due to a series of major road maintenance projects. The national road authority, Rijkswaterstaat, is updating aging highways, bridges, and tunnels across the country, with heavy disruptions concentrated around the Randstad region.
Several primary routes connecting to Amsterdam are directly impacted by full closures and lane reductions. Travelers heading toward or around the capital can expect added travel times ranging from 30 minutes to an hour on peak routes.
Crucial highway and tunnel closures
A major disruption affects the A1 motorway toward Amsterdam, where a complete closure is in place between the Eemnes and Muiderberg junctions until August 17. Traffic officials warn that drivers using this corridor should prepare for up to 60 minutes of additional travel time.
West of the city, the Wijkertunnel on the A9 is closed in both directions until August 8 to allow for a full replacement of its ventilation system. Local commuters are being redirected through the Velsertunnel, while long-distance traffic is being advised to detour via the A10 Coentunnel.
Infrastructure maintenance backlog
The extensive summer schedule is part of a broader effort to address a national backlog in infrastructure maintenance. Much of the Dutch highway network, including its major bridges and tunnels, was constructed during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s and has reached the end of its intended lifespan.
The road agency’s efforts are overlapping with separate local maintenance projects conducted by individual municipalities, provinces, and rail operator ProRail. These concurrent projects mean drivers may encounter multiple detours on a single journey.

Rijkswaterstaat strongly advises motorists to check route planning tools before departing and to avoid traveling during morning and evening rush hours whenever possible. Officials also suggest working from home or choosing public transportation and bicycles for regional travel during peak construction weeks.
