Participants in this year’s Canal Parade received a traditional blessing with a colorful twist at the Oosterdok on Saturday morning.
A figure known as the Pink Sint gathered with crowds near the water to bless the parade boats and wish them a safe journey through the city canals.
The character was created by an anonymous businessman from Aalsmeer, who decided to travel into the city to support the festive procession.
A alternative tradition
Rather than arriving on his traditional steamboat, the character met with visitors along the waterfront on foot to hand out cheerful well wishes.
Instead of a standard holy water sprinkler, he used a bright pink toilet brush to symbolically bless each passing vessel and its crew.
Onlookers gathered to pose for photos, dance, and sing adapted seasonal songs as the boats prepared to depart.
Celebrating WorldPride in the city
The event coincided with the main boat procession of WorldPride, which brought 80 decorated vessels into the heart of the capital.
Organizers planned the departure routes from several locations around town, with the Oosterdok serving as a major launch point.
The performer explained that he prefers to remain anonymous so that the playful character maintains its sense of mystery.

He described the appearance as an enjoyable way to step outside his comfort zone while bringing humor to the gathering.
Public transport providers including GVB adjusted services across the city to manage the large crowds attending the day’s festivities.
