Caravan ownership in the Netherlands has grown by 10 percent over the past six months, bucking a broader European trend toward self-contained camper vans.
Data from the European Caravan Federation shows that motorhomes make up roughly three-quarters of new leisure vehicle purchases across most of Europe, but Dutch holidaymakers continue to prefer towed trailers.
A strong local tradition
About 409,000 caravans are currently registered in the country, compared to around 200,000 motorized campers.
This ratio means that roughly one in every 20 Dutch households owns a caravan, a far higher concentration than in neighboring countries like Germany or Italy.
Practical perks and tax changes
Industry experts point to practical advantages during campsite stays, as travelers can unhitch their primary vehicle to explore surrounding towns and narrow rural roads without moving their entire living setup.
Financial factors are also influencing the shift, including a recent increase in motor vehicle taxes for camper van owners that took effect at the start of 2026.
Demographic appeal
While the popularity of modified vans grew rapidly during the pandemic among younger travelers, older demographics and families are driving the steady demand for caravans.
Retirees often opt for new high-end models, while younger families frequently turn to the second-hand market for their summer trips.
