Starting on Monday, August 31, tram line 26 will extend its route past its existing terminus to serve the developing islands of IJburg. The line reaches both Centrumeiland and Strandeiland, providing residents with a faster public transport link into central Amsterdam.
The journey between Strandeiland and Amsterdam Centraal Station takes approximately 25 minutes. The route length increases by about two kilometres.
Three new stops are added along the extended section: Centrumeiland, Buiteneilandlaan, and Franz Kafkastraat. The previous end stop is being renamed Theo van Goghpark.
Delays and network testing
The expansion was originally scheduled to open in December 2025, with later targets set for May and July 2026. The opening was delayed by issues with the local power supply.
All technical systems underwent testing before passenger operations began. Municipal transport notices indicate that initial start-up disruptions could still cause occasional cancelled runs in the opening period.
Capacity on line 26 had already been expanded ahead of the extension by coupling two trams together. Full timetable details are published on the municipal transport operator’s website.
