Health Minister Sophie Hermans has advised residents to sleep under mosquito nets if they have them to protect against West Nile virus infections.
The advice follows the death of a 78-year-old man in Utrecht. Nine new infections were reported last week, bringing the total number of known cases to 18 and the death toll to three.
Protective steps for vulnerable groups
Those who died were elderly individuals who had existing medical complications. Hermans stated that personal protection against mosquito bites is the only way to prevent infection, also urging people to stay alert to insects flying inside their homes.
Mosquitoes acquire the virus by feeding on the blood of infected birds. People with underlying health issues are advised to wear covering clothing or install window screens.
Overall risk remains low
The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment stated that some of the recorded infections are in Utrecht province. The institute noted that the chance of catching the virus remains small, and the risk of becoming severely ill after infection is also low.
The Health Ministry is alerting healthcare providers to the virus’s symptoms. Guidance is being shared directly with general practitioners and regional municipal health services.
