Schiphol chief and local mayor swap roles for a day

Haarlemmermeer Mayor Marianne Schuurmans and Schiphol director Pieter van Oord swapped roles for a day to better understand each other’s work.

The exchange began with a symbolic handover in which Schuurmans received an airport pass and Van Oord took the mayor’s gavel. Van Oord visited the Cruquius Museum and met local residents, while Schuurmans toured operations in front of and behind the scenes at Schiphol.

Differing interests

Schuurmans noted that a direct job swap between a municipal leader and a corporate executive is unusual. While Haarlemmermeer is economically dependent on the airport, many local residents suffer from noise and aircraft disruptions.

Van Oord acknowledged that the airport and the municipality often have conflicting priorities over health, the environment, and noise. He added that it is normal for Schiphol to remain accountable to the community on these issues.

Addressing scrutiny

The joint appearance prompted questions about whether such an exchange is appropriate given their conflicting interests.

Schuurmans acknowledged that the question is fair, noting that Schiphol’s scale makes it more than just a typical business. She stated that the exercise was not meant to show off a close friendship.
