The replica of the VOC ship Batavia was towed out of Amsterdam on Thursday 1 October, just two weeks after it came to the city for repairs.

The trip back to Flevoland is expected to be the last voyage the ship ever makes.

The Batavia rode on a floating pontoon, pulled by tugboats.

That morning, its route out of the city took the huge ship past Centraal Station, among other spots.

Wood rot below the waterline

Two weeks earlier, the ship had made the same trip in reverse so it could be restored at the NDSM wharf.

The part of the hull that had always been underwater had been suffering from serious wood rot for some time.

It has since been concluded that the Batavia is no longer fit to float.

A new home on land

When it reaches Lelystad, the ship will be pulled ashore and moved to Museum Batavialand.
