The Amsterdam West district has no idea what happened to the wildlife crossing in Westerpark.

The tree trunks and boulders that made up the crossing disappeared some time ago from the small tunnel under the railway by the Overbrakerpad.

They gave animals a sheltered route from one side of the park to the other.

Questions in the district committee

The Party for the Animals (Partij voor de Dieren) raised the matter at a district committee meeting on the evening of Tuesday 6 October.

It asked why the crossing had gone, whether an ecologist had been involved, and whether it would be restored or replaced.

District executive Daniëlle de Jager said she had no idea, and asking around among civil servants turned up nothing.

Nobody knows who ordered the removal.

Waternet works may explain it

De Jager admitted the situation was a bit odd, since each trunk and boulder weighs hundreds of kilos.

She said Waternet may be responsible, as a water main runs under the tunnel and the company recently did work there.

She promised to investigate and to haul a tree trunk back for the animals as soon as possible.
