The municipality is investing €2.5 million in community centres in vulnerable neighbourhoods, with new or renovated meeting places planned in five Amsterdam districts.
The centres are intended to give residents places to meet, as the city grows and residents’ needs change.
Projects in West and Nieuw-West
In West, a new community room called Buurtkamer Rombout is planned for the Frederik Hendrikbuurt, where residents need a permanent meeting place.
Residents have so far been able to meet temporarily at Buurtkamer De Reiger.
Buurtkamer Rombout will be in a former school building, which is to be renovated and made more energy-efficient.
The plans also include adding a mezzanine to the space.
In Nieuw-West, the district plans a new community room at Dijkgraafplein, where concerns about liveability and safety have persisted.
Existing facilities in the area no longer match local needs, and the new space will also house the Wijkpraktijkteam.
The team brings together the municipality, police, housing associations and community organisations to work on a clean, safe and liveable neighbourhood.
While Buurtkamer Rombout and the Dijkgraafplein room take shape, residents looking for somewhere to gather can browse community centres across the city.
