How to choose a weight-loss provider in Amsterdam
The 25 listings in this directory split into two different kinds of service. Some are diet and lifestyle coaches β often working in the Dutch "1:1 dieet" or gewichtsconsulente style β who guide food choices and habits without prescribing anything.
Others are clinics or GP practices that can assess whether medication such as Ozempic, Wegovy or Saxenda is appropriate and prescribe it under a doctor's supervision. Decide which one you actually need before contacting anyone: a coaching relationship is a different commitment than a medical program with intake screening and follow-up. Our Weight-Loss Services in Amsterdam guide covers this distinction in more detail.
Whichever route you take, ask upfront how the program is paid for and what happens if it includes medication your Dutch health insurer will not cover. If exercise is part of the plan, check whether the provider partners with a local gym or whether you will need to arrange that separately β our Amsterdam gyms and fitness directory lists options nearby.
Questions people ask
What's the difference between a diet coach and a medical weight-loss clinic in Amsterdam?
A diet or lifestyle coach guides nutrition and habit change without prescribing medication, while a medical clinic or GP can assess a patient and, where medically justified, prescribe weight-loss medication under a doctor's supervision. Private clinics also typically run a fuller health check, covering kidney function, cardiovascular health and possible contraindications, before agreeing to treat someone.
Is Ozempic or Wegovy covered by Dutch health insurance?
Ozempic is reimbursed under the Dutch basisverzekering only when prescribed for type 2 diabetes and specific medical criteria are met. If you want it purely for weight loss, without a diabetes diagnosis, it is not reimbursed and you pay for it yourself. Wegovy is not currently reimbursed at all: the Zorginstituut Nederland (National Health Care Institute) gave negative advice on reimbursing it in July 2024, citing high costs and limited long-term data.
Can I get weight-loss medication through my huisarts (GP)?
It is possible, but usually only after other steps. Patients with obesity who do not have type 2 diabetes are generally required to complete a one-year lifestyle program focused on nutrition and habits first, and a GP may prescribe medication off-label for a BMI above 30 once that has been tried.
What does it cost to pay for GLP-1 medication myself?
Self-pay costs for a drug such as Ozempic in the Netherlands have been reported in the range of roughly β¬250 to β¬450 per pen, depending on dosage, guidance and pharmacy, with most patients using one pen a month. Ask any provider you contact for their current pricing rather than relying on a general figure, since it depends on dosage and supervision included.
What's the difference between Ozempic and Wegovy?
Both contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, and belong to the same drug class (GLP-1 agonists), but they are approved for different uses. Ozempic was developed and approved for type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is a higher dose registered specifically for treating obesity and overweight.
What should I ask before choosing a clinic that offers medication?
Ask what the intake and health screening involves, since reputable private clinics run a general health assessment covering kidney function, cardiovascular health, allergies and other contraindications before treating anyone. Also confirm age (18 or over), and note that medication is generally not offered during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or to people with a history of eating disorders.
