The useful thing to know about losing weight in the Netherlands is that the cheapest route runs through your GP, not through a clinic.
Two of the main options are covered by basic insurance, and most people paying privately never find out they existed.
What basic insurance already pays for
Every basic policy (basisverzekering) includes three hours of dietitian advice per calendar year, which is roughly four to six appointments.
Those hours are charged against your annual excess (eigen risico), so if you have not used it yet you will pay for them yourself up to that limit.
The second route is the gecombineerde leefstijlinterventie, usually shortened to GLI, a two-year supervised programme combining diet, exercise and behaviour coaching.
It is covered by basic insurance, it does not come out of your excess, and it needs a referral from your huisarts.
Eligibility is set nationally rather than by your insurer, and turns on your BMI together with related risk factors such as raised blood pressure or blood sugar.
Ask your GP about GLI by name, because it is not always offered unprompted.
Where medication fits
Prescription weight-loss medication is available in the Netherlands but reimbursed only under narrow conditions, and outside those conditions you pay the full price at the pharmacy.
It is prescribed through your GP or a specialist, alongside a lifestyle programme rather than instead of one.
Anything sold to you without a consultation, or shipped from abroad, is worth refusing on the spot.
Private coaching and what it actually is
Most businesses listed under weight loss in Amsterdam are personal trainers and nutrition coaches rather than medical clinics, and the honest way to read them is as gym-plus-diet support.
They are not covered by insurance, they do not require a referral, and there is no protected title, so ask directly what qualification the person holds.
Omnia Personal Training on the Keizersgracht runs from six in the morning to ten at night every day of the week, which is the widest availability in the category and the reason its 181 reviews sit at a straight five.
BeyondFit Amsterdam on the Tweede Kostverlorenkade in West pairs personal training with weight-loss coaching and, unusually here, opens at weekends until mid-afternoon.
Improve Personal Training on Linnaeushof in Oost adds boot-camp sessions and nutrition support and runs weekdays until eleven at night, with nothing at all at the weekend.
Helder Movement and Growth on Van Hallstraat in the Staatsliedenbuurt is the same weekday-only shape, seven in the morning to ten at night, Monday to Friday.
Circle of Wellness on the Warmoesstraat is coaching only rather than training, on office hours from Tuesday to Friday, if what you want is the food side without a gym attached.
Weight Loss Wizard on the Westerdoksdijk aims specifically at founders and executives and keeps evening slots to ten, including Sunday evenings.
Several of the better-reviewed names in this category are in Amstelveen rather than Amsterdam, so check the address before you build a routine around one.
Reading the reviews honestly
Ratings in this category cluster at five stars on very small samples, and a perfect score from fifteen reviews tells you less than a four-point-eight from a hundred and fifty.
Sort by review volume rather than by rating, and treat anything under about twenty reviews as untested.
Questions worth asking before you pay
Ask what the total cost is for the full programme rather than the per-session price, and whether there is a minimum term.
Ask what happens at the end: a programme with no plan for the year after it finishes is the one people regain on.
Ask who supervises, whether they are a registered dietitian (diëtist) or a coach, and whether they will write to your GP.
Walk away from anything promising a fixed number of kilos by a fixed date, and from anything that requires you to keep buying a product.
Start here
Book the GP appointment first, ask about the dietitian hours and about GLI, and only then decide whether you want to pay for anything on top.
If you do, browse the full directory of Amsterdam weight-loss services and start with the ones you can reach on foot.
