Amsterdam Chiropractors: A Practical Guide

guide-98066

Chiropractic clinics in Amsterdam cluster hard in Oud-Zuid and De Pijp, and most of them keep split days rather than office hours.

That combination is what makes booking awkward, so the useful information here is where the clinics are and when the doors are actually open.

How the money works

Chiropractic is not covered by Dutch basic health insurance, so treatment is paid out of pocket unless you hold supplementary cover (aanvullende verzekering), which reimburses part of the cost on many policies.

Session limits and per-visit caps differ enough between insurers that it is worth reading your own policy before the first appointment rather than after it.

No referral is required, so you can book a chiropractor directly instead of going through one of the city’s doctors first.

What to check before you book

Chiropractic sits outside the BIG register that covers doctors, dentists and physiotherapists, which means the title is not legally protected in the Netherlands.

Membership of a recognised professional association is the credential to look for instead, and practices that hold one generally say so on their own site.

Where the clinics actually are

The concentration in the south of the city is hard to miss: Amstelveenseweg, Koninginneweg, Stadionweg, Maasstraat, Ceintuurbaan, Pijnackerstraat and IJsbaanpad each carry a clinic, most of them within a few tram stops of one another.

Outside that band the options thin out fast, and the main exceptions are Solar Chiropractic on the Overtoom in West, INTER CHIRO on the Van Hallstraat by the Westerpark, Centrum voor Chiropractie on the Raamplein in the centre and Boothe Chiropractie on the IJburglaan.

Clinics and their timetables

Pure Health Chiropractic on the Stadionweg has the widest weekday span of the lot, eight in the morning to seven at night from Tuesday to Friday, with Saturday to half past twelve.

Chiropractor Amsterdam on the Maasstraat in the Rivierenbuurt is the busiest here by review count at 339, works as a functional neurology clinic and keeps straight hours of half past nine to five on weekdays.

Boothe Chiropractie on the IJburglaan is the only one of these out east, running half past nine to seven every weekday plus a Saturday morning.

Chiropractic Connection on the Amstelveenseweg opens Monday afternoons only, Friday mornings only and Saturday nine to twelve, with split morning-and-afternoon blocks in between.

Ninety-nine per cent of its 188 reviews are five-star, the highest share of any clinic on this list.

Wellbeing Chiropractic on the Koninginneweg is shut on Mondays, works split days the rest of the week and opens on Saturday until one, on 284 reviews at 4.9.

Centrum voor Chiropractie Amsterdam on the Raamplein runs the shortest week of any of them, Wednesday to Friday only, which is worth knowing before you plan around it.

Solar Chiropractic on the Overtoom is led by Yuni Chen and works with women dealing with recurring or unresolved complaints, as part of a wider holistic practice, closed Mondays.

One Chiropractic Studio on the Aalsmeerweg runs split days from half past eight to seven, Tuesday to Friday, and a Saturday morning to half past one.

Hill Healing, trading as Chiro Brandon, works from the IJsbaanpad and builds treatment around the Zone Technique, across four short weekday blocks and nothing at the weekend.

INTER CHIRO Amsterdam on the Van Hallstraat by the Westerpark is closed on Thursdays and splits mornings and afternoons the rest of the week, with all 59 of its reviews five-star.

Chiropractor, physiotherapist or manual therapist

Physiotherapy sits inside the BIG register and is reimbursed more readily, which is the practical difference between the two when your supplementary cover is thin or absent.

If the complaint might need a formal diagnosis or imaging first, start with a GP, since those visits are covered by the basic insurance.

Complaints that are not spinal

Jaw pain and some headache patterns trace back to teeth rather than posture, which makes them a question for one of the city’s dentists and dental clinics.

Amsterdam’s psychologists and therapists are listed separately, and the city’s pharmacies handle prescriptions and over-the-counter advice.
