Amsterdam UMC will end all patient care at its VUmc buildings on the edge of the Amsterdam Zuidas by 2040 at the latest.
From then on, clinical services will take place only at the hospital’s campus in Amsterdam Zuidoost.
The Zuidas location will remain open for research and development.
Why care is moving
Hospital leaders say concentrating care in one place is needed to keep delivering high-quality treatment in the future.
Amsterdam UMC was created in 2018 when the former VU medical center merged with AMC Amsterdam.
The two sites together hold far more expensive floor space than the organization needs, board member Yvonne Koppelman explained.
Shrinking the building stock will free money for digitalization and new medical technology.
The two campuses
The VUmc site sits beside the Vrije Universiteit and borders the Zuidas business district.
Its counterpart, the former AMC campus, stands in Amsterdam Zuidoost.
Patients who now receive treatment at the Zuidas will eventually travel to the southeastern location instead.
The long runway until 2040 gives the hospital time to plan the transition in stages.
What continues on site
Research and development work will carry on at the Zuidas without interruption.
Only patient care is being relocated under the current plan.
The change lets the hospital cut surplus real-estate costs while putting resources into modern tools and systems.
For people who live or work near the Zuidas, the nearest full hospital services will shift farther southeast over the coming decades.
