A new public sculpture has been installed on the roundabout at the intersection of Seineweg and Basisweg in the Sloterdijk industrial area. Created by Dutch artist Hans van Bentem, the piece titled “All Aboard” features a shipwreck motif surrounded by protruding spears of light.
The installation was commissioned by the City of Amsterdam following a design competition for the location. Van Bentem designed the sculpture as a visual metaphor, taking inspiration from the medieval concept of the ship of fools to reflect modern social dynamics.
A visual addition to Westpoort
The work sits in the center of the traffic circle, an area that was previously empty space. Embedded lights inside the structure will illuminate the piece at night once final electrical connections are completed.
Public art is a common fixture across the capital, which maintains approximately 1,700 outdoor artworks across its public spaces.
The local municipal art department regularly assigns works to public infrastructure like roundabouts, bridges, and squares to improve streetscapes in commercial and residential neighborhoods.
