Roadworks near Marnixstraat and Rozengracht create traffic confusion

Ongoing construction around the intersection of Marnixstraat and Rozengracht in the city center is causing confusion among drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Temporary signs, single-direction bridges, and yellow lane markings have created a complex route that many road users are struggling to follow.

Drivers coming from the direction of the Elandsgracht are currently prohibited from entering the intersection, yet many continue to do so.

Drivers report that digital navigation tools like Google Maps still instruct them to turn onto the junction, leading to unexpected traffic violations and close calls with cyclists.

Risky conditions near fire station

Nearby, a narrow temporary bridge opposite the local fire station is restricted to outbound traffic heading away from the city center. Pedestrians are completely barred from using the bridge, while cyclists are supposed to follow dedicated detours.

Despite these clear restrictions, cyclists frequently ride against traffic across the bridge, and pedestrians regularly use it to cross the canal. The bridge is reserved for emergency vehicles travelling inward, and past incidents have seen foot traffic interfere with emergency responses.

Long term updates under Oranje Loper

A spokesperson for the municipality of Amsterdam acknowledged the challenge, noting that officials have added extra banners to standard yellow detour signs and set up dynamic traffic lights for emergency access.

Continuous police enforcement is not feasible as officers are needed elsewhere in the city.

The temporary traffic measures are part of the broader Oranje Loper infrastructure project, which involves renewing several bridges and redesigning major arterial roads in the city center. Construction on the project is planned to continue through 2028.
