The Kaagbaan runway at Schiphol is out of service for seven days of annual maintenance starting today. The closure runs through next Tuesday to keep the runway in good working order.
Work will be paused on Saturday and Sunday, 26 and 27 September. The runway will reopen temporarily across the weekend to accommodate arriving and departing flights.
Traffic shifts to other runways
The temporary closure means Schiphol will make heavier use of the Zwanenburgbaan, Aalsmeerbaan, and Buitenveldertbaan. People living beneath the departure and approach routes for those runways may notice more aircraft noise over the coming week.
Schiphol acknowledged that the work could cause extra disruption and pledged to carry out the project efficiently in partnership with construction firm Heijmans.
Annual inspections and repairs
During the maintenance period, crews will inspect and repair the asphalt and runway markings. The project also covers cabling inspections, flushing the rainwater drainage system, mowing adjacent grass fields, and cleaning or replacing runway lights.
