Safety experts and trade groups are warning residents about a sharp rise in electrical meter cabinet fires across the Netherlands.
Data compiled by knowledge center KRADO for grid operators network Netbeheer Nederland shows that reported incidents in meter cabinets rose from 106 in 2021 to 176 last year.
The increase equates to roughly three electrical accidents every week, with the vast majority involving fires.
Overloaded systems and poor wiring
Industry specialists attribute the growing risk directly to the ongoing shift toward electric energy in Dutch households.
Older breaker panels are frequently struggling to keep up as residents simultaneously install solar panels, heat pumps, EV chargers, and home batteries.
Electricians regularly report finding dangerous modifications, including mismatched components, melted insulation, and multiple wires jammed into clamps that were never designed for them.
When different contractors install individual appliances over time, few people take a step back to assess whether the main electrical panel can safely handle the combined load.
Preventing household fire hazards
Experts also point out that many residents make the situation worse by using the meter cabinet as extra storage space.
Installers frequently discover shoes, vacuum cleaners, and umbrellas packed tightly inside the narrow enclosures.
This clutter blocks proper ventilation, raising the temperature inside the panel and providing easy fuel if a spark occurs.
Installers recommend keeping the area completely clear and having a certified electrician inspect the full system before adding any new high-power appliances.
