The creators of the Analogue aF-1 35mm film camera have pushed back its expected release while they make adjustments to pre-production prototypes.
The project is led by the team behind Analogue, a popular film photography store located in Amsterdam.
Initial plans called for the compact camera to go into production by the end of last year, but fine-tuning technical components has taken longer than anticipated.
Addressing prototype issues
In a recent update to subscribers, the development team explained that testing identified several issues that must be fixed before mass production can begin.
Rather than setting a new deadline that might change again, the developers decided not to commit to a specific delivery date for now.
Team lead Ralph Tilon noted that building a new camera from scratch proved far more complex, expensive, and time-consuming than originally expected.
Earlier technical updates indicated that design modifications to the camera’s autofocus system contributed significantly to the extended timeline.
Camera features and production
First announced in early 2025, the aF-1 is designed as a modern compact 35mm film camera equipped with a built-in 35mm f/2.8 lens.
It features a sliding front cover reminiscent of classic point-and-shoot models like the Olympus Mju-II, along with a LiDAR-based autofocus system.
While the design and engineering strategy are managed from Amsterdam, the actual manufacturing is taking place in China.
The development team is scheduled to travel to China soon for an engineering review with their manufacturing partners to assess the next stage of pre-production.
Pre-orders and market context
Pre-orders for the camera remain open on the company’s website at a price point of €450.
The project arrives amid a broader resurgence in film photography, joining other recent new compact release announcements across the industry.
The team plans to share further progress reports once they are confident in setting a firm production schedule.
