Dierenasiel Amsterdam (DOA), one of the main animal shelters in the capital, is asking local residents to consider adopting rabbits after receiving three new litters in rapid succession.

The shelter recently rescued several rabbits found abandoned along public roads. Unbeknownst to staff at the time, a number of the rescued females were pregnant upon arrival.

Shelter reaches full capacity

Under normal circumstances, shelter staff sterilize or castrate incoming animals as quickly as possible. However, several of the newly rescued rabbits were too close to giving birth for procedures to take place.

Staff report that the facility is now completely full, housing rabbits of various ages and colors across its enclosures.

Adoption requirements for residents

Because rabbits are naturally social animals, the shelter only places them in pairs, or individually with owners who already have a compatible rabbit at home.

Those interested in adopting can view available animals and application requirements directly on the DOA platform or visit the facility to discuss options with animal caretakers.
