The night train between Alkmaar and Amsterdam will continue running through 2027 after the municipality of Alkmaar extended the trial by one year.

The service from Amsterdam toward Alkmaar has seen particularly strong passenger numbers since the trial began in December 2024.

Trial gives service time to grow

Alkmaar and NS launched the connection to test whether passenger demand is high enough to justify a permanent service.

Passengers frequently use the train after going out, attending concerts, or finishing late work shifts in Amsterdam.

The municipality noted that new rail connections take time to build awareness, and two full years will provide clearer data on passenger habits.

Possible route expansion

Alkmaar and NS will review the trial results in 2027, after which the municipal executive will decide whether to make the night train permanent.

Uitgeest will continue participating in the trial during 2027.

Castricum is also exploring whether the night train could stop there in the future, which could happen by 2028 at the earliest.
