Ingrid Kristiansen remains the fastest woman in the history of the Dam tot Damloop almost forty years after setting the course record.
In 1987, she completed the ten English miles, or 16.1 kilometres, in 50 minutes and 31 seconds.
The 70-year-old Norwegian returns to Zaandam this Sunday to hold the finish ribbon. She noted from Norway that she hopes a runner will finally improve on her mark this year.
Advancements in distance running
Kristiansen expressed surprise that she is still the record holder given how much the sport has changed.
Running shoe design has evolved significantly, including the introduction of carbon that reduces weight and increases bounce.
She also pointed out that African athletes have dominated the rankings in long-distance running for decades.
