A market stall on the Noordermarkt is charging 22 euros for an organic brown emmer bread. A sprouted loaf at the same stall costs 20 euros.
The amounts have sparked debate on the street and on social media following a video shared by the Havermelkelite account. Passersby voiced disbelief at the price tag, with one calling the cost ridiculous even for quality sourdough.
Other shoppers defended the loaves, arguing that buyers willingly pay for craft, origin, and high-quality ingredients. One customer noted that he buys half a loaf and cuts it into thin slices to make it last.
Baker defends production time
The vendor behind the loaves is Wim Steinhauer, owner of Wims Organic Fine Food. He says the price is fair given that each loaf weighs two kilograms and requires at least 36 hours of rising time.
Steinhauer added that only a few bakers possess the skill to produce the bread. Overwhelmed by the recent publicity, he declined to appear on camera.
Some visitors to the market view the purchase as a social media trend or a luxury habit. One shopper described buying high-end food as a small treat for people who feel shut out from larger investments like buying a home.
