Amsterdam metro lines to rebrand as M1 through M4

Amsterdam metro lines will drop their current 50-series numbers in 2028 when a new timetable takes effect across the city.

Lines 50 through 54 will be replaced by M1 through M4, accompanied by new route colours designed to be easier to distinguish for visually impaired and colour-blind passengers.

Simpler network numbering

Under the revised system, line M52 becomes M1, line M51 becomes M2, and line M54 becomes M4. Lines M50 and M53 will be merged into a single route designated as M3.

The transport authority, Vervoerregio, noted that the planned merger of M50 and M53 already required extensive updates to network maps, station signage, and route planners, prompting officials to overhaul the numbering scheme at the same time.

Research commissioned by the authority showed that the M1 through M4 designations are easier to understand and remember for daily commuters, tourists, day visitors, and people with lower literacy skills.

First overhaul since 1990

The transition marks the first major restructuring of metro line numbers and colours since the system was introduced in 1990.

Vervoerregio chair Elise Moeskops stated that the clearer layout and high-contrast colours will make the network more accessible to passengers from Amsterdam and beyond, while better matching the city’s international character.
