Amsterdam’s Olympic Stadium came through largely unscathed after a fire broke out in the crawl space beneath its car park on Thursday evening 8 October.
Some offices are out of use, and Topsport Amsterdam, which supports elite athletes, says its head office will stay closed for five months.
Smoke and evacuation
The fire in the national monument released heavy smoke and a strong smell across the area.
The stadium, home to more than thirty businesses, was evacuated, and the fire was only brought under control early in the night.
The building seems to have escaped significant damage, though the full extent is not yet known and the cause is under investigation.
Cars safe and marathon on track
All the cars in the garage were undamaged, and owners could collect them when it reopened on Friday morning.
The TCS Amsterdam Marathon, which starts and finishes at the stadium every year, can go ahead on Sunday 18 October for now.
Geert Wit of organiser Le Champion told NH Nieuws that small adjustments may be needed, but preparations are on schedule and safety comes first.
