Dutch web shops will get nearly a year and a half longer to introduce the strictest consumer protection features of Wero, the European system set to replace iDEAL.
From October 2026, all Dutch banks are due to support Wero for online payments.
That schedule appears in a migration roadmap the European Payments Initiative shared last week.
Shoppers will then be able to pay with Wero no matter which Dutch bank they use, and for online purchases in Germany, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg too.
Steady pricing window
The sharper changes in the plan focus on web retailers rather than consumers.
Transaction fees for Wero are widely expected to sit higher than current iDEAL rates, though final figures are not yet public.
EPI has committed to keeping the price level the same as today’s iDEAL and Wero charges through December 31, 2028.
That promise gives stores several years of cost certainty while they adapt their checkout systems.
Purchase protection shift
Retailers have also raised concerns about a new built-in safeguard called purchase protection.
Under the full Wero rules, every payment would automatically include the right for a buyer to dispute the charge and request a chargeback afterward.
iDEAL does not offer that option, so the feature would add clear new duties for sellers when goods arrive late, damaged, or not as described.
A structured dispute process would also let the consumer’s bank and the Wero provider step in to help settle disagreements.
Later final step
Purchase protection was first slated for autumn 2026, in line with the bank switchover.
After talks with the market, EPI now plans to roll it out only at the end of 2028, once web shops already accept basic Wero payments.
Ivo Broeren, EPI’s country relationship lead for the Netherlands, said the extra time lets stores introduce Wero in a way that feels familiar to current iDEAL checkouts.
New Wero products such as subscriptions are still expected around summer 2027 and will carry purchase protection from day one.
For people in Amsterdam who shop online or run web stores, the longer runway means the everyday checkout experience can stay largely unchanged for now.
