The body of the missing crew member from a sunken barge in the Coenhaven has been found.
A large search operation had been under way since yesterday morning after the vessel went down in Amsterdam’s western port area.
The first report of the sinking barge came in around 8:30 a.m. yesterday.
Rescue teams used a sonar boat and multiple dive units to look for the person who had been on board.
What happened
A duwbak is a type of barge used as a floating cargo hold, often carrying sand, gravel, or coal on inland waterways.
It remains unclear what caused the barge to sink.
A team from the national police unit is still examining the sequence of events.
Specialists from the police traffic accident analysis team are also involved in the inquiry.
Ongoing investigations
Both the Netherlands Labour Authority and the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate have opened their own investigations.
The Coenhaven sits within the wider Port of Amsterdam complex, an area with regular barge and cargo traffic.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the person who died or further details about the circumstances on board.
The focus for now remains on establishing how the barge ended up under water and whether safety rules were followed.
