Electric bicycle owners in Amsterdam face vastly different insurance costs depending on the specific neighborhood where they live.
A recent analysis shows that the annual price difference between the most expensive and cheapest policy in the municipality reaches up to 234 euros.
Insurance providers calculate these premiums based on localized risk assessments, taking into account neighbourhood theft rates, vandalism, and traffic accident statistics.
How local risks affect monthly premiums
Data based on a standard 2,500 euro e-bike insured for three years reveals that residents in Weesp pay the lowest rates in the city, starting at 5.38 euros per month.
In higher-risk neighborhoods, the premium for that same electric bike can reach up to 24.86 euros each month.
Insourcers also factor in parking safety, as streets with fewer secure locking options or private storage facilities tend to see higher claims.
Traditional bicycles also experience regional price swings, though the financial gap is smaller, maxing out at a 120 euro yearly difference across Amsterdam.
Police report thousands of stolen bicycles
The variation in insurance pricing reflects ongoing security concerns across the city’s urban districts.
Official figures show that victims reported 6,219 stolen bikes, mopeds, and light mopeds to local authorities during the first six months of the year.
This represents a minor decrease compared to the same timeframe last year, when police logged 6,370 theft reports.
However, the actual number of missing bikes is likely higher, as many owners choose not to file an official report with the Politie after a theft occurs.
