Two of the four paddling pools in West may have to close because the city lacks the funds to modernize them. Across Amsterdam, nine pools currently fail to meet statutory water purification requirements.
The issue was outlined in the municipal budget for 2027, presented by the city executive. The pools pose no danger to public health, but they no longer comply with official regulations.
Funding shortfalls after 2027
While some funds are available to renovate a portion of the nine pools in 2027, municipal resources will be insufficient from 2028 onward. This means delayed maintenance can only be partially addressed, creating a risk that play pools will have to be shut down permanently.
The budget does not specify which exact locations will be retained or closed. Alongside the two sites in West, four paddling pools in Nieuw-West are also at risk.
Amsterdam has fifteen official paddling pools in total, which open from May through September. The four existing pools in West are located in Westerpark, on Gibraltarstraat, on Bellamyplein, and on J.J.
Cremerplein.
