A painted minibus joins Museum Night in Oost: Here’s a different way to see Oost tonight: a free 20-minute ride in a minibus painted by Amsterdam artist Hedy Tjin. It leaves Wereldmuseum, Linnaeusstraat 2, between 19:00 and midnight, passing buildings, monuments and street art. There are just seven seats per ride, so you’ll need a Museum Night ticket and a reserved time slot.
Ron Blaauw is changing things up on Sophialaan: Ron Gastrobar on Sophialaan is closing in February, nearly 14 years after it opened. But Ron Blaauw isn’t leaving: he plans to reopen with the same team and a new concept next year. We’ll hear what that looks like on December 1. His other businesses stay open; he wants this next place to feel more spontaneous and less tied to reservations.
Eight more wind turbines proposed for the port: The port wants eight more wind turbines, with blade tips reaching 200 meters. Five would sit on company property and three on public land, joining the 32 already in the harbor. The original proposal was for 12, but talks with neighbors and businesses brought that down. There are still provincial procedures and planning changes to work through.
Why Flevoparkbad means more than a swim: If you’ve ever wondered why people are so attached to Flevoparkbad, volunteer and architect Sabine Schleimer makes a good case. It’s the sheltered green spaces, the clever layout and a community now more than 4,000 members strong. Renovations will happen in phases and keep the spirit of Enrico Hartsuyker’s design. The proposed indoor pool is heading elsewhere in Oost.
Breakfast in a construction pit on Veerstraat: Breakfast looked a little different on Veerstraat Friday: neighbors set up tables and chairs in a construction pit to protest a substation planned outside their homes. Liander says technical checks helped decide the spot. Workers left and plan to try again Monday. The neighbors say they’ll be back too, taking a cue from a similar protest in 2021.
Cultivated Wagyu gets a route into pet food: Wagyu grown from cells could be heading for pet bowls before our plates. At this week’s protein-production conference at RAI, Ivy Farm announced UK approval to sell it as a pet-food ingredient. Permission for human consumption is separate, and European pet-food approval is still pending. The Oxford company expects its first commercial-scale production run in early 2027.
Amstelvoorde gets its signs before most of its homes: You might spot a new place name on Spaklerweg or near Duivendrecht station: Amstelvoorde. The Ouder-Amstel neighborhood is getting 6,200 homes, but so far there’s only a flex-housing complex. Work on part of the development should start next year, with the first homes ready in four to six years. Residents picked the name; the signs have arrived early.
Nieuwe Meer ferry faces losing its subsidy: The little Helena ferry between Amsterdamse Bos and De Oeverlanden could lose its future along with its subsidy. The city won’t fund the seasonal Nieuwe Meer crossing in 2027. Owner Tim Klijn says he can’t keep it running without help and would have to sell the boat. Supporters are pushing back, so this isn’t a settled goodbye yet.
An unusual viewing at a €5 million Amstelveen property: Viewing a €5 million property doesn’t usually involve negotiating with the people squatting there. NH tagged along at Anna’s Hoeve on Amsteldijk Noord in Amstelveen, a former commercial building offered with a large plot. A judge says the occupants can stay for now but must allow viewings. This one went ahead despite some tension; the agent expects a slow sale.
A9 closed toward Badhoevedorp this weekend: Heading toward Badhoevedorp on the A9? You’ll need a detour this weekend. The stretch from Holendrecht to exit 6 at Aalsmeer is shut until Monday at 05:00 for tunnel-wall and noise-barrier work. The other direction and the Aalsmeer entrance toward Badhoevedorp stay open. Allow another 10 to 30 minutes via the A2, A10 and A4.
That Sloterdijk data-center letter is not from the city: A letter with the city logo landed in Sloterdijk mailboxes with alarming claims about the Donauweg data center. It wasn’t from the city. Officials also reject its claim that the project would stop 30,000 homes from being built. Protest organizer Geef Tegengas! says it didn’t send it either. An official-looking envelope isn’t always what it seems.
Swapfiets mechanics are not sold on its AI helper: Swapfiets has built an AI helper that looks at bike problems through cameras and suggests repairs. There’s just one snag: the experienced mechanics would rather trust themselves. CEO Marc de Vries shared that at EDAY, adding that a human hand still beats the robots for repair work. The technology may work, but winning over the workshop is another job.
Life Force brings personal stories to OLVG: The chapel at OLVG Oost is becoming a stage for Life Force, built around stories from adults affected by cancer. No-Mads Collective brings together movement, spoken word, music and visual art. It’s part of OLVG’s November program on loss, comfort and what makes life valuable, with concerts, conversations and even a comfort-cake baking contest alongside it.
Swap toys at Afvalpaleis in Oost: Have toys at home that nobody touches anymore? Bring them to Afvalpaleis on Dapperstraat 76-82 and swap them for something your kids haven’t played with yet. Today’s toy swap runs from 12:00 to 17:00. You get a little shelf space back, and they get the fun of finding something different without another new purchase.
Explore feelings at De Krakeling: For a morning that starts with feelings rather than screens, try Prikkels at De Krakeling, Pazzanistraat 15. The interactive children’s show starts at 11:00 today and turns sensations and emotions into something to explore together. It’s less about sitting back for a spectacle and more about getting curious about what’s happening inside.
Dvořák’s Seventh at the Concertgebouw: An hour with Dvořák is a pretty good way to spend Saturday night. Klaus Mäkelä leads the Concertgebouw Orchestra through the Seventh Symphony from 21:00 to 22:00 at Het Concertgebouw, Concertgebouwplein 10. This Essentials concert gives one dark, dramatic piece the whole spotlight, rather than packing several works into the evening.
Makoto Ozone brings TRiNFiNiTY to BIMHUIS: Pianist Makoto Ozone has a foot in both jazz and classical music, and tonight you can hear how that plays out with his trio TRiNFiNiTY. He’s joined by Shimpei Ogawa on bass and Kunito Kitai on drums at BIMHUIS, Piet Heinkade 3, from 20:30 to 22:00. Seats are €23, standing €19, including fees; reduced prices are also available.
A final gathering of cello soloists at Muziekgebouw: The Cello Biënnale is signing off with a roomful of its remaining soloists. Cello Coupé brings them together at Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, Piet Heinkade 1, from 21:00 to 22:30 tonight. If you’ve been trying to decide which festival players to hear, this closing concert lets you catch several in the same evening.
Museum Night takes Amsterdam into the small hours: Tonight is Museum Night, when more than 40 museums and cultural institutions stay up late with music, dance, performances, food and drinks alongside the art. The citywide program runs from 19:00 to 02:00. You can make a night of your favorite collections or take the chance to wander into somewhere you’ve never been.
HOV2+ mixes dance, music and visual art at Belcampo: Four duets, several art forms, one evening at the library’s stage: HOV2+ brings young makers to Podium Belcampo / OBA De Hallen, Hannie Dankbaarpassage 10, from 19:30 to 22:30. Expect dance, performance, music and audiovisual art, with pieces exploring everything from personal boundaries to analog and digital worlds. Tickets are €10.
The Flick turns De Uitkijk into its stage: A play about cinema employees, performed inside a cinema: The Flick has found a fitting home at De Uitkijk, Prinsengracht 452. Amsterdam On Stage brings Annie Baker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning story to the city’s oldest operating movie theater tonight at 19:00. It’s in Dutch, without subtitles, and runs 170 minutes, so settle in for a full evening.
Pick up a free tree at Tolhuistuin: Got room for a tree in your garden or on your balcony? Trees for Amsterdam is handing out 4,000 of them at Tolhuistuin, Tolhuisweg 3, today from 10:00 to 15:00. They’re free, but you’ll need to register. A nice reason to cross the IJ and bring a little more green home with you.
Go behind the scenes at the theater on Leidseplein: You’ve probably passed the theater on Leidseplein plenty of times; today you can have a look behind the scenes. ITA’s English-language tour starts at 15:00 at Leidseplein 26. You’ll get a closer look at the building’s history and the work of a repertory company, including spaces you wouldn’t normally see as an audience member.
Daily markets open today: Lindengracht (Jordaan), Dappermarkt (Oost) and Albert Cuyp (De Pijp). See all markets open today.
