Why this has to go through the gemeente
Moving to a new address inside Amsterdam does not update itself.
The move has to be reported to the gemeente where the new address is, and until it is processed, official mail, tax records and some registrations still point at the old place.
The process is the same one covered in more detail in the Amsterdam Gemeente Procedures Guide For New Residents, but a move within the city has its own narrow window and document list.
When to report the move
The gemeente accepts a move notification starting 4 weeks before the move date and up to 5 days after it.
Reporting outside that window is possible but slower, and the consequences of missing it entirely are covered separately in What Happens If You Don’t Update Your Address With the Gemeente in Time.
The fastest way: online with DigiD
Reporting online is the quickest route and requires a DigiD login.
Anyone who has not set one up yet should start with the Amsterdam DigiD Guide For New Residents, since DigiD is also needed for most other municipal tasks in Amsterdam.
What to upload with the online report
The online form asks for a scanned copy of the rental or purchase contract, including the page with the signatures.
Renters or buyers moving into a household where someone is already registered need a signed consent statement from the resident who has lived there longest, plus a copy of that resident’s valid passport, ID card, driver’s license or residence permit.
Anyone moving into an anti-squat (antikraak) arrangement uploads a copy of the user agreement instead of a rental contract.
Reporting in person at a Stadsloket
A move can also be reported at a Stadsloket without an appointment, except in Weesp, which requires booking one in advance.
Bring a passport, ID card, driver’s license or residence permit, plus the same contract and, where relevant, the same consent statement and ID copy required for the online form.
Having someone else report it
Another person is allowed to submit the move notification on someone else’s behalf.
That person needs a completed authorization form, their own valid ID, and a copy or scan of the mover’s valid ID.
Reporting by post
A move notification can be sent by post using the official move form, along with a copy of a valid ID and the same contract or consent documents required online.
Letters go to: Dienstverlening – Gegevensverstrekking en Verificatie, Postbus 2214, 1000 CE Amsterdam.
How long it takes
The new address appears in MijnOverheid within 2 weeks of the move date.
Written confirmation by post follows within 3 weeks of the move date.
Who finds out automatically
Once the gemeente updates the address, a number of organizations are notified automatically, including the Belastingdienst, pension funds and health insurers.
Anyone unsure whether a specific organization is on that list should check directly with the gemeente or that organization, since the address change itself only covers the BRP registration described in the Amsterdam BSN And Gemeente Registration Guide For Expats.
Don’t forget the parking permit
A parking permit cannot be transferred or newly applied for until the new address is actually registered.
That step comes after registration, not instead of it, so it is worth building into the same move-week checklist as everything above -- the fuller version of that checklist is in the Amsterdam Address Change Checklist for Expats.
