A years-long conflict over an unofficial swimming jetty on the Borneokade may be nearing an end. Houseboat owners Jantien de Laaf and Wieger van Aalderen, who live next to the jetty and run a bed and breakfast there, have agreed to relocate their vessel to the Javakade.
The dock has grown increasingly busy during warm weather, drawing crowds from across the city. The pair launched their first legal challenge against noise nuisance in 2011, ultimately fighting seven to nine separate court cases.
Years of court rulings and failed measures
The municipality tried several measures over the years to manage the disruption, including temporary swimming bans and shortening the length of the jetty. On 29 April, the Council of State ruled in favor of the houseboat residents, ordering the city to enforce nuisance rules.
On 29 May, the municipality placed fences across the middle of the dock without advance notice to the neighbourhood. The move sparked anger among local swimmers and led to hostility and threats directed at the houseboat owners.
Conditions on the new berth
The planned move to the Javakade comes with conditions from the couple, including a requirement that inland commercial vessels moor at least 25 metres away from their boat.
Current residents along the Javakade have already raised concerns about the arrival of the houseboat during a recent information evening.
