Asayech Ayichew has broken the long-standing women’s course record at the Dam tot Damloop, completing the 16.1-kilometre distance in 50 minutes and 5 seconds.

The previous mark of 50 minutes and 31 seconds was set by Ingrid Kristiansen in 1987 and had stood for nearly four decades.

Ayichew broke away with Janeth Mutungi during the run from Amsterdam’s Prins Hendrikkade to the Burcht in Zaandam.

Passing the 15-kilometre mark in 46 minutes and 55 seconds, a record appeared out of reach before Ayichew produced a final sprint to finish inside Kristiansen’s time.

Men’s race and Dutch finishers

In the men’s event, Jamal Kiprono took victory with a finishing time of 46 minutes and 9 seconds.

The men’s field started 6 minutes and 4 seconds after the women, matching the gap between the respective course records.

Stan Niesten from Beverwijk was the fastest Dutch man across the line, recording a time of 47 minutes and 32 seconds.

Jennifer Gulikers finished as the fastest Dutch woman in 54 minutes and 57 seconds, while Jill Holterman from Egmond aan den Hoef was the top North Holland woman in 56 minutes and 5 seconds.
