Bicycle accidents in Amsterdam have risen by just over 20% compared to 2019, according to traffic data from Rijkswaterstaat analyzed by comparison site Independer.
A total of 1,466 bike crashes were recorded in the capital last year, which is 246 more than in 2019.
Electric bikes played a significant role in the increase, with nearly a quarter of all incidents involving an electric bicycle. That total included 187 fatbikes, 144 standard e-bikes, and five speed pedelecs.
The city’s most dangerous junctions
The intersection of Elandsgracht and Marnixstraat saw the highest number of crashes in the city, recording 30 accidents over the past five years.
The busy junction brings cyclists, pedestrians, car drivers, trams, and buses together in a single crossing.
Other collision hotspots since 2021 include the Museumbrug intersection at Weteringschans with 22 crashes, the Plesmanlaan and Baden Powellweg roundabout with 21, and the Hugo de Grootplein roundabout with 20.
National accident rates per resident
Amsterdam recorded the highest absolute number of bicycle accidents in the Netherlands last year, ahead of The Hague and Rotterdam.
When measured per capita, the capital ranks 46th nationwide, with 15.7 bike accidents per 10,000 residents.
Leiden recorded the highest rate in the country at 34.9 accidents per 10,000 residents, while island municipalities including Schiermonnikoog, Texel, and Vlieland also ranked in the national top ten.
