The Dutch homeowners’ association Vereniging Eigen Huis has launched a dedicated reporting platform following an influx of complaints regarding misleading energy product sales tactics.
Property owners attempting to make their homes greener report being pressured into rushed contracts for heat pumps and residential battery systems.
High pressure and unclear costs
According to the association, salespeople are using aggressive techniques to close deals immediately on the doorstep or over the phone.
Some companies allegedly issue vague cost estimates, demand massive upfront deposits, or falsely claim to represent official government bodies and utility suppliers.
The issue is coming to light as more residents install sustainable hardware to offset high utility bills and meet national emission targets.
Risks to the energy transition
Vereniging Eigen Huis director general Cindy Kremer stated that while residents are motivated to invest in green technology, misleading promises harm public confidence in the broader energy transition.
She noted that signing contracts under high pressure often leads to unexpected financial distress and substandard equipment installations.
Data gathered through the new online intake point will be handed over to national market regulators to help identify systematic corporate abuse.
How property owners can protect themselves
The association recommends that residents never accept a high-value quote on the spot without taking time to compare alternatives.
Anyone considering major energy equipment upgrades should secure independent professional guidance and verify all written contract conditions before submitting a deposit.
