A national heat plan has come into effect across the Netherlands as weather forecasters predict temperatures reaching up to 36 degrees Celsius early this week.
The RIVM activated the measure nationwide following an initial rollout in the southeastern provinces, where local temperatures reached 30 degrees over the weekend.
To support public safety during the warm period, the meteorology agency KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for Monday and Tuesday.
High temperatures expected
Forecasts show afternoon temperatures across most regions hovering between 28 and 36 degrees Celsius.
The elevated temperatures have already prompted many residents to head to outdoor swimming spots and public parks across urban areas.
Health authorities note that prolonged high heat poses significant risks for older adults, young children, and people with chronic health conditions.
Advice for staying cool
Officials recommend drinking plenty of water throughout the day, even before feeling thirsty, to avoid dehydration.
Residents are also encouraged to keep indoor living spaces cool by drawing blinds and closing windows during the sunniest hours.
Any strenuous outdoor activities, including heavy exercise or chores, should be scheduled for the early morning hours or late evening when air temperatures are lower.
Local support and safety
Urban areas often experience higher temperatures due to heat trapped by concrete, asphalt, and tall buildings.
Caregivers, neighbors, and family members are urged to check in regularly on elderly relatives or neighbors living alone during the warm stretch.
Conditions are expected to remain unseasonably warm before cooler air moves into the region later in the week.
