For cheap second-hand furniture in Amsterdam, start at a kringloopwinkel such as RataPlan, De Lokatie or Kringloop West.
For restored mid-century pieces, the vintage dealers on the eastern islands and in De Pijp are where to look.
Furnishing a flat here does not have to mean a day at a flat-pack warehouse.
The city has a deep second-hand trade, from charity-run thrift stores to dealers who restore mid-century sideboards, plus some of the oldest flea markets in the country.
Below are thirteen places worth knowing, grouped by the kind of hunt you are on.
For the full list, see the second-hand and vintage shops in our directory.
What is a kringloopwinkel?
A kringloopwinkel is the Dutch thrift store: people bring in what they no longer need, and the shop sorts it and sells it on at low prices.
Most are run by social enterprises rather than private dealers, so the money goes back into reuse and often into jobs.
RataPlan and De Lokatie both say on their own sites that they create work for people who find it hard to get into the job market.
Stock turns over all the time as new donations are sorted and put on the floor, so the shop that had nothing for you on Tuesday can have exactly the right table on Thursday.
Expect sofas, cupboards, crockery, lamps, books, clothes and bikes in one building, priced to move rather than to impress.
Many also take donations, and some collect larger pieces from your home, which is worth knowing when you move out.
Our guide on where to donate furniture and household goods covers that side of it.
Kringloop shops for everyday finds
RataPlan (Generatorstraat and Van Slingelandtstraat)
RataPlan is a kringloop chain with two Amsterdam shops, at Generatorstraat 10 and Van Slingelandtstraat 39 in West.
It sells furniture alongside the usual household goods, offers free pickup of donations, and runs a webshop so you can browse before you cycle over.
Both shops are in our directory: Generatorstraat and Van Slingelandtstraat.
De Lokatie (Noord and Oost)
De Lokatie has three shops: Distelweg 85 and Buikslotermeerplein 6 in Noord, and Eerste Oosterparkstraat 236 in Oost.
Besides second-hand furniture and household goods, it does upcycling and sells refurbished computers.
See the Buikslotermeerplein and Eerste Oosterparkstraat shops in our directory.
Kringloop West (Tweede Hugo de Grootstraat)
Kringloop West sits at Tweede Hugo de Grootstraat 70 in the Frederik Hendrikbuurt, in West.
The range runs from furniture and clothes to books, kitchenware, music, electronics and retro racing bikes, and its site gives the hours as Monday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00.
Vintage furniture and design dealers
These shops choose, clean and often restore every piece, so prices sit well above a kringloop, but so does the hit rate.
Several open only a few days a week, so check before you make the trip.
Vintagonist (KNSM-laan)
Vintagonist collects, restores and reupholsters mid-century modern furniture from a showroom at KNSM-laan 299 on the eastern islands.
Think sideboards, wall units, dining sets, desks, chairs and lighting, with the showroom open Friday to Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00 and other days by appointment.
It also has a listing in our directory.
Vintage Designs (Czaar Peterstraat)
At Czaar Peterstraat 151, Vintage Designs specialises in the wall systems of the designer Poul Cadovius, alongside other mid-century furniture.
It is also a retailer for reissued Louis Poulsen lighting, and the shop is open on Saturdays from 12:00 to 17:00.
See its directory listing too.
Fortune Flea (Zeeburgerpad)
Fortune Flea on Zeeburgerpad 26 in Oost sells vintage and antique furniture, home accessories, clothing and jewellery.
The owner opens the doors for one long four-day weekend a month and spends the weeks between hunting through warehouses and markets in Belgium and France, so look up the next open weekend first.
It is in our directory as well.
Juki Amsterdam (De Pijp)
Juki is a vintage design shop in De Pijp that focuses on 20th century furniture, lamps and accessories, restored where needed.
New pieces go online every Thursday at 18:00, and the showroom opens on Fridays from 13:00 to 17:00 and Saturdays from 12:00 to 18:00, or by appointment.
Found in Sweden (Slotermeer, Nieuw-West)
Found in Sweden at Herman Poortstraat 17 sells vintage cabinets, seating, tables and lighting, and also restores pieces and runs workshops.
Its site does not list fixed opening hours, so get in touch before you go.
De Weldaad (Noordermarkt)
On the Noordermarkt at numbers 35 and 36 in the Jordaan, De Weldaad is an interior shop mixing vintage pieces with mirrors, glassware, wall decoration and textiles.
Its contact page gives the hours as Monday to Friday 10:00 to 18:00 and Saturday 9:00 to 17:00, closed on Sunday, and it has a directory listing with us.
Flea markets and vintage fairs
Markets are where the bargaining happens, and the best stalls are often picked over early.
Waterlooplein market
The Waterlooplein market calls itself the oldest flea market in the Netherlands, with around 300 stalls in the city centre.
It runs Monday to Saturday from 9:30 to 18:00, and among the clothes and souvenirs you will find vintage goods, antiques, books, records and bikes.
Noordermarkt
The Noordermarkt in the Jordaan began as a market for second-hand clothing and still mixes it with antiques and crafts.
It opens on Mondays from 9:00 to 14:00 and on Saturdays from 9:00 to 16:00.
IJ-Hallen at NDSM
IJ-Hallen bills itself as the biggest flea market in Europe, with around 600 stands indoors at NDSM-Plein 1 in Noord.
It runs on selected weekends only, from 9:00 to 16:30, with adult entry at €6.50; check its site for the next dates.
CABINET at the Centrale Markthal
CABINET is a curated weekend market for vintage furniture, design classics, art, fashion, books and vinyl in the Centrale Markthal at Jan van Galenstraat 6 in West.
CABINET runs as a series of weekend editions, so check its site for the next dates; the organisers say advance tickets are cheaper than paying at the door.
For the rest of the city’s markets by day of the week, see our guide to Amsterdam’s markets.

Getting your find home
Measure your stairwell before you fall for a wardrobe, because Amsterdam stairs are steep and narrow.
Ask the shop whether it delivers, and for anything big, a mover with a van and a hoist is worth booking.
Our guide to choosing a moving company and the movers and storage section of our directory are good places to start.
If you want new pieces alongside the old, browse our guide on where to shop for furniture in Amsterdam or the furniture stores in our directory.
And when something has to go to make room, you can sell it online or book a free collection through the bulky waste service.
